For the past several weeks a message keeps popping up saying that there is an update available for Classic Shell but when I try to download the update I get the reply that I am using the most p to date version. Is there some way I can stop this annoying pop-up?

Which version of Classic Shell are you running and on which OS? You are getting the notification to update to which version?

I am running Win 7 Home but I have no idea what numerical number applies to Classic Shell. I have looked everywhere and cannot find such a number. All I can say is that if I attempt to update I get a reply "Your version of Classic Shell is up to date." so I must assume it is the latest available version - whatever that number is.
The pop-up message does not offer a particular version. It merely says that there is an update available.
I hope this information helps you to work out a solution.

Right-click on the start button and open the Settings. The version is listed in the title.
It is also in the Readme file and the Help file.

Download the Classic Shell Utility from here: http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/
Run it, select the first setting to save a system log, and send the log to me.

Looks like Classic Explorer is still version 4.1.0. Either something got messed up during the installation of 4.2.4, or you haven't rebooted yet and the files are not yet replaced. Try restarting, then verify the version of the file C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicExplorer64.dll. Currently it is 4.1.0, but it should say 4.2.4.

If a restart doesn't fix it, use the utility to remove Classic Shell (the second option). Then reboot, and install 4.2.4 cleanly.

Interesting.

As far as rebooting is concerned, I shut down my computer every night and this reminder has been popping up for at least a month so it would appear not to be due to a faiure to reboot.

I have also repeatedly run "Check for updates" in Classic Shell and it has always come back saying I have the latest version. So it appears that the updater on the website cannot read its own program correctly.

I checked the version as instructed and it is indeed v 4.1.

I uninstalled it using my standard uninstaller (Revo) and then installed 4.2.4 which I had downloaded on Aug 8 when the pop-ups started. I rechecked the version and it confirms 4.2.4.

Hopefully, now they will disappear!

Thanks for your help.

The way the update works is that each component - start menu, Classic Explorer, etc, checks itself if there is a new version based on its own version. Then it launches the Update component to show the dialog. In your case Classic Explorer was version 4.1.0 but the Update was 4.2.4. That's why you get the popup (from Classic Explorer), but then the Update says everything is fine.

I don't know how this can happen. I have not seen reports of this before. If you didn't use the official uninstaller to remove 4.1.0, but something like Revo, it may have left traces of it on the system. Don't do that :) Either uninstall from the Programs and Features page, or with the Remove button in the Classic Shell installer, or if all else fails, force-remove it with the Classic Shell Utility.

Do you recall anything out of the ordinary during the upgrade from 4.1.0 to 4.2.4?

Nothing unusual noted.
Revo Uninstaller uses the programs built-in uninstaller to uninstall.

Revo uninstaller should not be used as a primary uninstaller. Try to always use the program's original uninstaller first and then when it's done, use Revo Uninstaller if you are particular about cleaning up some data left behind.

That is exactly what my post said. Revo uses the programs built-in uninstaller and then offers the opportunity to scan for leftovers.
