Sorry if this is too basic, but I can't find the (obvious?) answer:
I noticed that Office, PDF and .txt documents are in the list, but when I edit a .BAT or .CMD file (using Notepad or Wordpad), it's not in the list.
Is it a MS question?
I'm on Windows 8 64 bit.

The Recent Items menu gets its contents from this folder: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent

By default when you select a file in the Open dialog, it stores a shortcut to the file in that folder. If the dialog (or the program using it) doesn't add a shortcut, then the start menu can't show it.

Thanks, that explains some of it - but not all:
I've tried opening .BAT and .CMD files in several (MS/non-MS) programs, and they are never in the Recent list.
If I create a new file a.qwerty and open it in the same programs, it is always in the list.
Seems to me as if the .BAT/.CMD filetype is registered somewhere to not appear at all in the list?
I know this is not a CSM question...

Windows excludes some file extensions from that list. .BAT and .CMD are considered executable files. Executables files are not put on the unified Recent Document list.
