Hoping someone can help:

My installation fails while the screen says creating shortcuts. It says the installer has stopped responding and I get this message:
1:1101 2:C:\Config.Msi\33e0c89e.rbs 3:32

Then when I close that pop up there is another which says:

1: 1712

Thanks!

Have you tried leaving the installer alone for a few minutes? Sometimes it can take a while and be unresponsive.

Thank you so much for replying!
I left it for half an hour, would that be long enough? It's not that it's just not doing anything - a pop up comes up telling me it has stopped responding...
It invites me to cancel and launch again later - but I don't even know where to find it to launch it with lovely window 8.1.... one of the reasons I wanted classic shell :)

Yeah, half an hour is plenty. You can save the installer instead of running it directly after download. Then it will be in your Downloads folder and you can run it multiple times.

Thanks! Have found it and run again, but get a completely different error message this time:
1946.Property 'System.AppUserModel.ID' for shortcut Classic Explorer Settings.Ink could not be set. It's trying again, but looks like it's stuck again.
Think I'll try this again later.

What version of Windows are you using?
I think 1946 is just a warning, not an error. It should not retry.

@dugong42, are you running Windows 7? If yes, then according to this KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2745126, you can safely ignore this message.

I did some more research on your error messages and I found that:
1:1101 2:C:\Config.Msi\33e0c89e.rbs 3:32 actually means: "Could not open file stream: C:\Config.Msi\33e0c89e.rbs. System error: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."

1: 1712 means: "One or more of the files required to restore your computer to its previous state could not be found. Restoration will not be possible."

I don't know what that means out of context, but maybe can give you a clue what you are doing. Maybe you were running the installer twice?

The error message 1946 should have an additional text, something like "HRESULT ...". Can you include the full text?

And finally, you can try running the installer with logging enabled, using the command lines listed here: http://www.classicshell.net/faq/#install_commands
Attach the log file here.
