Using Classic Shell, I am still unable to reduce the width of the task bar when it is on the left side of the screen. Selecting the edge and dragging works fine. However, it does not allow reducing it to the typical 1/4 inch size that WinXP allows. Yes, the icons are a small size ... see attachment.

Note that along the bottom, it can be reduced to the 1/4 inch size.

That's because Classic Shell does not control the size of the taskbar. It is up to the OS.

Is there a way to reduce the size of the task bar as XP does?

Also, is there a way to reduce the size of the icons as XP does? ... see both attachments.

I don't know a way to change the size of the taskbar. You can set the menu to use smaller icons from the Skin tab.

There is a trick you can use on Windows 7 to get a narrower taskbar: http://www.eightforums.com/customizatio ... skbar.html which doesn't work with Windows 8.

It's not clear to me where I put the abbreviated Start logo?

Open Start Menu settings and go to the Start button tab. Since you are using the Classic theme, it will be easier if you pick the Classic button and remove the "button text" by erasing everything from that field. You could use the button icon from C:\Windows\System32\winver.exe. (Classic button requires an icon, custom button accepts an image).

Or you can use a custom button. Put the image anywhere and then choose a "Custom button". It will allow you to browse to the location of your Start button image. Here are instructions to change the Start button to a custom one: http://www.classicshell.net/forum/viewt ... f=18&t=853

I don't think any of this will help. The size of the taskbar doesn't depend on the size of the start button.

Yes I know. I was only showing him how to achieve a smaller button that fits the small taskbar once he gets that using the auto-hide and DWM trick. :)

I tried the post dated 2:37pm, 13 Nov 2013 by GauravK. I selected a .bmp I created ... displayed fine in settings ... plus I changed the size to 3. After selecting the OK button, the "Start" button no longer appears ... is beyond the top of the screen ... see attachment.

How do I access this so I can reset the settings?

You can access the shortcut for Start Menu settings from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell.

Ok, thanks!!! I am able to return to the Classic button.

I would like to reduce the size of the Start button by replacing it with my smaller Start button. When I select my .bmp image, it displays only the top half of the icon ... the remainder is pushed off the screen ... see attachment.

You need to choose Classic button and erase the button text and use the button icon from C:\Windows\system32\Winver.exe. Also, note that this will not affect the width of the taskbar.

Hmmmmmm. It is unfortunate we are not given the option of reducing the width of the taskbar. Thanks.

You need to create a bitmap image with 3 states stacked vertically. That's why the button only shows the first 1/3rd of your image.
Alternatively you can use the classic button style. You will need to provide an ICO file for the image. The text can also be adjusted from the settings.

Well there is good news. The latest 7+ Taskbar Tweaker (4.4.2) removes the minimum width restriction the vertical Taskbar on the side has. It has an setting in 'Advanced Options' for that. :)

Note: Third party software recommendations are only for your convenience. Classic Shell bears no responsibility for them whatsoever.
