Hi there,

I am testing v3.9.1 and after contacting Gaurav, who asked me to post this, I am now reporting it.

On the main menu the icons at the top that flash up like a Windows 7 menu - one is corrupted.

All the icons work, except the Network Connections icon. This always appears as low resolution, while the other are high resolution.

If you go to: ClassicShell Settings | Customise Start Menu | Network Connections | Edit Item and then attempt to change the icon - whatever icon you change it to is always low res. once displayed.

I am using the regular RTM windows 8 Pro (*not* the 8.1 preview) and this always occurs even after deleting classic shell's and Windows own icon caches and rebooting. This is a repeatable problem with no answer.

[While I'm at it, I would also ask for a feature request where sub-menus can be added to the Network connections button (like the Classic menu style) in the new Windows 7 style look, showing wireless connections, etc. as well. It's a shame this feature/functionality was dropped in this look/style of Classic Shell.]

I checked on Windows 7, and the icon for that item comes from C:\Windows\system32\netshell.dll. Open it with a resource editor and see if the icon there has sizes larger than 32x32.

Hi the icon is there but only in one flavour.

There is no difference if I select that or another icon from that collection. However, all the other icons on the menu are in hi res.....?

Fixed it - the defaut icon Classic Shell uses is pre-programmed to use: shell32.dll icon number 257,

Instead use C:\Windows\system32\netshell.dll icon number 5. That will fix this issue.

It should not be shell32.dll/257 unless you set it that way manually. By default it should use whatever you see in Explorer.

Hi Ivo,

Thanks for the response.

You say that It should not be shell32.dll/257, however, this was the default path & all I did was install 3.9.1 over 3.9.0. I did not tamper with the icon path.

I did try to add a sub-menu, but Gaurav explained that at the moment that's disabled on the Windows 7 look. Hopefully it'll be reimplemented ;-) However, I didn't tamper with the icon path. Just so you should be aware that that shell32 path was default upon set-up.

Just so you can compare, here's a screenshot of the now fixed hi res. icon.

The default value should be blank, making it use whatever is in Windows.
The shell32.dll/257 is the default for that item in the Classic style. However there should be no crossover between the styles. If there is, that's a cause for concern as it was not intentional.

Are you sure you have not applied any third-party skin pack or settings pack?

Hi Ivo,

No third party skin pack except for maybe "WinAero Skin Pack for Classic Shell v1.0" (released by Gaurav) way back when I was using v3.6. I never uninstalled that. However, that was several versions ago and I installed new versions on top of that several times and did NOT enable the WinAero glass option in the tick box under the MENU LOOK tab of the settings pane.

The only thing I have customised from standard is a white Windows 8 Start button as you can see in the screenshot.

The Winaero Skin Pack affects only the Classic styles as the Windows 7 style didn't even exist when that skin pack was created. So it shouldn't affect the default icons in Windows 7 style, right?

Hi Gaurav,

Exactly. That skin pack should not affect anything. Yet, the shell32.dll/257 was the default for that item in the Classic style. Hopefully that'll be ironed-out vor 3.9.3
