Hi There,

Yesterday, I encountered a strange problem and/or bug.

I have Classic Shell on Windows 10 Pro.
For the past 5 years, I've been using Classic Shell on Windows 7, to great satisfaction. I've only been using Win10 for about two or three weeks, so I'm still exploring and tinkering with features and tweaks.

For as long as I can remember, I've had my personal files and folders on a different drive than my system files. Windows is on C:, My Documents (and everything similar) is on D:. The first thing I always do after a new install is change the default location of My Documents. This has never caused any problems; not with Windows, not with third party programs (such as Classic Shell).

Windows 10 is the first OS I use that lists anything other than just drives, in 'This PC'. So for the first time, it seemed useful to change the location of other 'My...'-folders as well.
So yesterday, I did just that: I moved Pictures, Music and Downloads from their default location to my personal location. I also used a little app to add two custom folders to This PC.
Afterwards, when I looked at the This PC link on Classic Menu, this is what I saw:

Because I wasn't sure whether or not the app and custom folders were causing the problem, I did a system restore and only moved the personal folders this time. Same exact thing happened, so it couldn't have been the app.

Just now, I thought I would just reverse all my actions and restore the default locations.
This has only increased, or more specifically: tripled my problems:

I would love to know what exactly has caused this, and if there's any solution!

Any thoughts? Advice?

Hoping to hear from you!

All the best,

Puck

I guess you are using the "Location" tab in the folder's Properties to move the folders? If not, you must use the Location tab. And Windows will ask you whether you also want to move the files to which you must say "Yes". If you say "No" there, there will be multiple folders showing in the Start Menu. i.e. you must not say No and manually move the files. Instead click "Yes" and let Windows move them.

The cause for this might be a bug in its KNOWNFOLDERIDs implementation which fails to update the old/new locations if you don't click "Yes" in that dialog.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I used both options: the location tab and the move-folder dialogogue.
I even deleted the actual physical old locations, so there's nothing there, in the old C:\Users\Puck - locations.

The listed items that you see, are exactly the same; ie. all the Music-menus give the same listing, all the Documents-menus, etc. They're just exact duplicates. Or triplicates..

Can you give the exact step-by-step method of how you got duplicate folders? And this happens only on Windows 10? Not on Windows 7?

Do you have the triple folders in Explorer when you view This PC, or is it just in the start menu?

Like I said: I had already changed the location of Documents. This hadn't caused any problems. Yesterday, I changed the location of Pictures, Downloads and Music. I did this by following the method you described: I right clicked the folder, e.g. Downloads; then Properties -> Location -> Move -> [OK] -> [OK]. I also confirmed the 'move all the files'-dialogue. I don't know after which specific folder relocation the doubling happened, I only noticed after all the folders were done. The only thing I know for certain is that the links hadn't doubled after the relocation of just Documents.
Since I've never have relocated any folders except Downloads, under WIndows 7, I have no idea if this same thing would happen there.

Just in the Start Menu. Explorer view is perfectly fine.

I only get duplicate folders inside the User profile folder of the Classic Start Menu but not inside This PC. Also, I only get them if I choose "No" for the "Move folder" prompt. Otherwise I get only one folder. It's hard to fix unless the issue can reproduced.
