I think it would be more efficient if you could still use hotkeys while the searchbox is selected by default. If the user types a single keypress, (after .5-2 seconds with no other keypress) then run the corresponding hotkey, instead of just searching for a single letter...
The only functionality this would hinder is single character searches (and could be remedied by pressing/releasing shift first)
Also tab is somewhat hard to hit (since it uses the same finger as the windows key you just pressed) It would be more convenient If you could select the searchbox with the spacebar too

Not sure what do you mean by hotkeys? Do you mean keyboard accelerators? In search results, you can use Alt+first letter to open them.

Yes the accelerators. I'm aware you can use alt when the search-box is selected, Its just don't feel that key-press should be necessary when searching for a single character is mostly pointless.. I'm aware that it might Irk some people who are used to the way it is, so I would suggest it as an option that is off by default.
