I'm using Windows 8.1. My programs keep sorting alphabetically. Whatever I add I new program it inserts it into alphabetical order instead of adding it to the end. How do I sort things by date installed?

I have "Sort the Main Menu only the First Time" checked. I would have though that that would do exactly what I needed. When I right-click on the program list, it gives me the option to Sort by Name, which sorts alphabetically, or Auto Arrange, which also sorts alphabetically.

Make sure "Auto Arrange" is unchecked (it keeps the menu always sorted by name). After unchecking Auto Arrange, do a "Sort by name" once. Thereafter, any newly installed programs will appear at the end, in the installed date order. However the ones you sorted by name already can't be sorted by date again (as least not as of version 4.2.1).

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, with "sort start menu only the first time" checked, and autoarrange unchecked, new programs are still inserted alphabetically. I uninstalled and reinstalled a program to double check.

Interesting, I installed a new program (one that had not been installed previously) and that one did appear on the bottom.

Thing is, the settings are now exactly the same as they were when things weren't working before. I wonder if the ordering gets lost on reboot or something.

When you sort or rearrange the menu, the order is stored in the registry. Any new programs added afterwards will show up at the bottom (also in alphabetical order).

So there is no way to sort things chronologically? Is it possible to open up the registry key and paste in our own ordering?

No, not possible. And how do you define chronologically? The creation or the write time of the folder? What if there are two folders combined into one? And do you look at the timestamp of the shortcut or the timestamp of the file it links to?

Basically the same functionality as Windows XP. Whenever a new program is installed, add it to the bottom of the list. If it is installed into an existing Start Menu folder, then add it to the bottom of that folder.

If I go into the folder C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and do "Sort by Date Created" (ascending) it seems to get the proper order, with the exception that it lists all folders before listing any files.

Well if there was a Sort by date function introduced at any point in the future, for folders, I would look first at creation date and time of any one of the 2 combined folders. For single shortcuts, it makes sense to look at the timestamp of the shortcut.

I would have figured that, since the purpose of this program seems to be to mimic the start menu from earlier version of windows, the chronological sort would be the default, or only, sort method.

I do not believe Windows XP was sorting programs by date. If you install 5 programs one after the other without opening the start menu, all 5 will appear at the bottom in alphabetical order.

Would it be possible to add a "Sort by Date Created" option?
