I have to restore my computer from scratch.

I would like to keep the same settings without taking screen shots. I'm using Win 8.1 pro and having a hard time finding where the settings data file is located so I can make a backup. Please help.

Thank you, Jim

Use the Backup button in the settings to save them to XML file, and you can load it later.
You need to do this separately for all components you have installed - the start menu, Classic Explorer, Classic IE.

Did not see that setting on the bottom, saved to xml, not sure I understand all components.
I saved it, now I just need to install programs and classic shell after?

Do you mean if I install any other new programs?

Thank you

Does this just save the settings and not the tree menu?

If you have installed the Classic Explorer component (for example if you use the Explorer toolbar or status bar enhancements) and you want to preserve the settings, you will have to save its settings to XML separately. That's because all 3 components are completely separate and have their own independent settings.

If by "tree menu" you mean the tree structure of the installed programs, then no, it won't be preserved. You will need to install the programs again on the new machine and customize the tree again.

Yes that is what I meant by tree structure.

I had installed the classic explorer and made a backup of the xml, it did not give me any separate options to do anything else. I hope that was enough as I'm restoring the desktop now. Thank you.
