while at first looks absurd, classic start menu is better than xp native start menu.
for example, when the number of items is too high the items do not fit on the screen; saerching would overcome this.

is there any way you could compile it so it can run on windows xp?
thanks.

Classic Shell uses too many APIs and features present only in Windows 7 and later. The 3.6.8 version is open source so you could hire any willing and experienced C++ developer to port it to Windows XP.

on opensource version is it just a matter of recompiling or are there some apis not present in xp?
is there any older version using xp compatible apis?

There are many APIs not present in XP. Ever since Classic Shell started, it started using APIs present only in Vista and up. So it will have to be heavily modified and many features cut/scaled back for it to run on Windows XP.
