i'm using areo desktop. when i turn on "Disable taskbar transparency" in classic start menu 4.0.4, the taskbar become completely black, regardless on what window or desktop color i change

i haven't use this option before so i don't know if this happens in older versions

version: 4.0.4
os: windows 7 x64
aero, window color = green, desktop color = white

i searched the forum, it seems previous reported problems are not the same as this one

Yes that's the expected behavior on Windows 7 - it turns black. I know the description is misleading. 'Disable taskbar transparency' makes the taskbar opaque without turning it black on Windows 8/8.1 only. On Windows 7, if you wish to disable Aero Glass transparency for the Taskbar and the Start Menu, use the built-in Windows option: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/28 ... sable.html

Actually i want to keep transparency for all other things except taskbar. But if it cannot be fixed in windows 7, it's acceptable if we have another feature: change color (or even background picture) of taskbar. I really don't look much at desktop but the taskbar is always there. Would be cool to change the looking of it

On Windows 7, turning off taskbar transparency without making it black is not possible at the moment with Classic Shell. You can change the taskbar color from Control Panel -> Personalization -> Color but it will change the glass color elsewhere too. If you want the taskbar color to automatically follow the wallpaper color, download AeroBlend: http://www.carthagosoft.net/AeroBlend.php

The taskbar is black because the image in the Aero theme is black (or very dark). It is most likely dark because it has pre-multiplied alpha.
If you want a taskbar of different color then you will have to edit the theme file. BTW, if you are going to be editing the bitmap in the theme you might as well make it opaque and then you won't need the Classic Shell setting.
Keep in mind few things:
  • the taskbar is not solid color. It has a border and a slight gradient.
  • there are 4 images in the theme file, for top, bottom, left and right taskbars.
