Using Windows 10 x64 and Classic Shell 4.2.5. When I open the CS menu with the WINDOWS key (which is the only way I do it), the keyboard is not captured and I can't type in order to search for and run programs. I've been doing it this way since like Vista, so it's very ingrained -- as well as the most efficient way to open the menu.

Also, when it's opened with way, the CS menu can NOT be dismissed by clicking outside of it -- you have to hit the WINDOWS key again.

When I open the CS menu by clicking on the icon, everything works as normal.

This might be what your looking for:

From classic shell settings(right click the start button and select settings), ensure that Access normally is selected, and 'selected by default' is checked from the search box tab. You may need to check 'show all settings' to see the search box tab

Thanks. "Access normally" was already selected under "Show search box", as was "selected by default". But I also misinterpreted what you said about "Access normally" at first and turned off accessibility, and that fixed the issue!



I'm afraid I spoke too soon! The problem only stops when I have the settings menu open! Once I close it, it comes back again.

So my request for help is still in effect!

Just to add a bit more information, when this problem happens, the Classic Start Menu doesn't get focus -- focus remains on the underlying app, so if it's a text or word processor, for example, whatever program I try to search for in CSM appears typed in the program.

This sounds vaguely familiar. I think last time it turned out to be some other software or autoit script or something that captures the focus.

While the settings UI is active, the custom hotkeys for the start menu are disabled. That's so you can actually type them in the settings without triggering the menu. Maybe that's a clue. Go to the Controls tab in the settings and clear the last two settings (right-click, select "Set Default").

I've reset everything in the "Controls" tab to default, but it hasn't changed anything, unfortunately.

@PanelSetDice, is your taskbar on auto-hide?
