Before installing Classic Shell in Windows 7 I could go to Start -> Search and type a name.

It would fist show files that were in the Start menu (like classic shell does), but it would also show all other files that were indexed. Thus I could quickly find file name that might be on my desktop or some other places. Now after installing Class Shell - Start menu it does not show files other than those in the start menu.

What am i missing?

thanks for the help

Alan

Classic Shell only searches the contents of the start menu, the control panel, and the PATH environment variable. It is not designed to search the indexed files.
Some version in the future may offer that functionality.

So on Windows 7, you can set Winkey to open Windows Start Menu if you need to search files and set mouse click to open Classic Shell's Start Menu. Or Shift+Winkey to open Windows Start Menu and regular Winkey to open Classic Start Menu.

Ivo thanks for the reply. I hope that is something to see in the future for search.

Gauravk, i did not realize i could use the SHIFT Win Key to do this. Very nice.... saw the config page.

Maybe i am doing it wrong, but i was playing with the "Additional Windows Menu Hot Key", but could not get it to accept key combinations.

The key combinations must have Alt or Ctrl+Shift to avoid interfering with other programs.

Well good news for you. Now the latest public beta version of Classic Shell which is available from the home page has full Windows Search integration, including file search. Try it if you are interested.

In my almost-replaced WinXPsp3 laptop I have an ancient utility, DirectoryNow! (so ancient that OldVersion.com doesn't have it any more), that lets me type a folder name (or part of it) and then comes up with a list of one or a few folders containing what I wrote into the DirectoryNow! window (which lives in the lower right corner of my screen, dimensioned 2" x .5", automatically expanding as needed).

DirNow! is extremely useful. For example, if I type in and then click on "xp only" (without the quotes) I go directly to D:\zSoftwareSources\Applications-Utilities\Installed Dell C840-WinXP Only, which contains my installed-software installation files.

But DirNow! goes back at least to 1997, so I think I was using it in Windows95, and definitely in Windows98 (and then Win2k and WinXP). So I suspect it won't work on my new Win7sp1 64-bit (of course also with 32-bit capability) laptop.

I have yet to find a way to persuade Win7's Windows Explorer to search for folders only.

So I am hoping that the next Classic Shell will include folder-only search in addition to Windows file-and-folder search.

you might want to take a look at http://www.launchy.net/
from what you describe it does the same thing (except with all files/folders)
