Hi Ivo,

I know at one time (with Win 7 and earlier) ClassicShell's ClassicExplorer piece offered the ability to change the dialogs, and that was good but alas that seems to be in the past for Windows 8 users.

However, one of the things I've noticed in Windows 8.1 is that sometimes the progress or conflict dialogs come up behind other windows.

Is there any way you can at least tweak them to come up in the front?

In Windows 8 it is quite broken, but I don't think there's anything I can do. They just don't respect the given owner window. I think the change was done so they can be triggered from a Metro app.

I'm having the same problem with the dialogs coming from the start menu. That's why the start menu closes after a drag operation, because there may be a dialog hiding behind it. There is no way for me to know or do something about it.

I use a copy replacement called PerigeeCopy (http://jstanley.pingerthinger.com/pscopy.html) because I got tired of Microsoft's copy dialog disasters with each release of Windows.

PerigeeCopy looks interesting... If I understand the instructions correctly, it can be set to be the default drag/drop handler. Is that your experience? And have you tried it with Win 8.1?

I think I'll test it in a VM. Should be interesting.

Edit: Seems to work in Win 8.1, though I got a strange error when trying to delete a file that was in use - "System call level is not correct".

As usual, thanks.

Yes it can be set as the default copy/move handler.

Actually, PerigeeCopy's far from perfect and could do with several improvements. The copied/moved files aren't selected in Explorer like Windows copy does, the speed isn't shown in MB/s but KB/s but I guess those are excusable. It's open source so a developer could easily modify it to add whatever it's missing. The main reason I use it is because of the options it has to postpone overwrite conflicts, skip all errors to the last, and ability to automatically queue copy jobs which I feel is better than pausing them manually. Plus it has a simple, non-ugly, native looking UI with the familiar Windows-like copy overwrite dialog and an awesome option to "Keep newer files" automatically based on date which is what I wanted.

Found something PerigeeCopy breaks.

I dragged some files out of 7-Zip and into a folder, using PerigeeCopy as the default drop handler, and it looked like it worked. Trouble is, the files didn't show up in the folder.

For now I've uninstalled this tool and I'll just deal with the pop-behind windows. Normally I organize my screen so that Explorer windows are in the upper part and the lower part, with a bit of space between them, so I usually see part of the pop-behind and can click on it.

I suspect if enough people complain Microsoft may tweak it to work better - though I'm way beyond holding my breath for fixes for Desktop things. Microsoft still seems bent on going anywhere but the desktop.

Ah indeed. I use WinRAR which has no trouble with PerigeeCopy which is why I didn't notice it. Maybe it's an issue with 7-Zip.

Could well be. There was a time when I was young and energetic and I'd take a look at the sources, but now... Time is always so short.
