Ever since I updated one of my computers with win 8.1 I cannot get the Classic Shell start button just the windows icon that came with 8.1 which brings me to the tiles. I am using the latest version of classic shell. The classic shell setting are for windows 7.

You need to run the installer again and select Repair.

This just happened to me. they automatically upgraded me to windows 8.1 & messed up what wasn't broken. I liked my classic shell button. I don't like this nuisance taking me back to the tiles. I flip to the tiles by accident all the time. I can go through the stupid charms I can't shut off. I can do it by putting my mouse in the corner. I could even do it by selecting that option in my shell menu, but there is no option with windows 8.1. I deeply regret getting a computer with windows 8.1. Had I had any clue. I would have run. I would have returned this computer if not for classic shell. ok done venting. How do I get it to run & "repair"? I went through download history & found the program & can't get it to open. I have a hard time finding ANYTHING on this computer. it's an alien. Thank you! :)

I hunted around the forums & based on what i read, i decided the best easiest fix was to delete then reinstall it. It WORKED! That was the least stressful thing I've had to to concerning this horrible operating system. Now if I would only get my cool star trek start button to work again. If I could, I would have a beautiful little Rose for a start up button. :) but I cannot do that. If only! for now I'm stuck with the windows 8.1 stupid button but my menu is back, so that was what was really important to me. Thank you for all the help. I read a lot of posts in a lot of different topics & that fixed it.

You will find some Start buttons at Deviantart.com. I found some roses and butterfly buttons:
