Problem: Jump lists do not work after upgrading to Windows 10 v1511 even though I am on Classic Shell 4.2.5

Steps taken:

  1. I just upgraded to Win 10 (got tired of the nag screens..!).
    1. Initially the windows start menu worked fine.
  2. Then a short while later, Classic Shell opened a dialog requesting authorization to configure itself for Win 10. I checked that Jump Lists are enabled in Windows and in Classic Shell.
    1. Classic Shell worked.
    2. But Jump Lists do not. Opened up some sample docs etc so I could populate some Jump Lists - no joy.
  3. I exited Classic Shell,
    1. Windows Start Menu does not work at all
    2. Taskbar Jump Lists do not work - I don't know if they worked before Classic Shell configured itself for Windows 10
  4. I then uninstalled Classic Shell, rebooted - no joy.
  5. Reinstalled Classic Shell - still no ice cream.
  6. Then went into elevated PowerShell and ran sfc /scannow
    1. scannow identified some warnings and at least one corrupted file (opencl.dll). The CBS log is attached. If anyone has an ideas, I'm all ears. I could not see any deal breakers in the log file. But I could be wrong.
Jump Lists are such a good productivity enhancement, I hate to see it broken.

Cheers, kkc

Classic Shell does not affect the taskbar jumplists. Most likely the jumplists are disabled in Windows. I don't remember the exact setting. I think it is in the Start section of the Personalization options.

Hi, Thanks for your response.

Yes, the setting in Windows is in PC Settings > Personalization > Start > bottom of dialog. This was on of the first things I switched ON after the upgrade.

Regarding Classic Shell, I noticed there is a jumplist setting in Settings > Main Menu > Enable Jumplists so now I am confused when you state that CSM does not affect jumplists. Is there any documnetation on this setting - I couldn't find any.

Many thanks, kkc

The setting only controls if the start menu will show jumplists or not. It is up to Windows to collect and store the information. The start menu just shows it if it is available.
You need to get your taskbar to work. Once that works, the start menu should work as well.

What a waste of time. Did not realize that Win 10 was a downgrade. Each reboot resulted in more failures... printers not enumerated etc. Just restored back to win 8.1 and productive again.

Well I would agree on that one. Windows 8.1 is better than Windows 10. Windows 7 is even better than Windows 8.1. :) Just my opinion.
