I uninstalled classic shell off of my windows 8 dell laptop, I was told I needed to reboot it. When I rebooted it and I logged in, my screen was black Except for the cursor. I have access to the task manager but I've tried a lot of things and can't seem to fix it. Please help

Most likely something didn't uninstall correctly.
Use the task manager to run the installer again and install everything. Then immediately run the installer again and uninstall everything. Then reboot.

That means something went wrong due to which Explorer.exe (which loads the Taskbar etc) isn't loading.

Using Task Manager, you should be able to run your web browser from C:\Program Files\ directory. Download the Classic Shell installer from your web browser and run it again as Ivo said, reinstall and then uninstall.

If you are able to start Task Manager, as a last resort, you can also try running System Restore. Type: rstrui into Task Manager's File > New Task (Run...) dialog and try to restore the system if nothing else works. You should be able to restore it to before you uninstalled Classic Shell, because a restore point is automatically created by Windows Installer when removing any app.

The installer of the latest version (4.2.3) as of Aug 8, 2015 is here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/018hs ... _4_2_3.exe

The installers for older versions are at: http://www.oldfoss.com/Classic-Shell.html or http://www.mediafire.com/folder/v8cv2m87ama92/archive

If you can't install the latest version, you could try downloading the installer of the version that you had before you uninstalled it.

HI,

I think I have encountered a different version of the same black screen problem. And I desperately need some help.

I upgraded to Win 10. Uninstalled Classic Shell through the Control Panel. However I had problems with Win 10 (keyboard not working and computer turning off randomly) so I downgraded to Win 8.1 again.

After starting up the computer again, I have the black screen described above. It seems like I have done a mistake and that Classic Shell is not properly uninstalled.

Classic Shell is still listed in the “uninstall or change programs” in the Control Panel, but if I try to uninstall I get the error message: “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder container containing the installation package ClassicShellSetup64_4_2_1.msi in the box below.”

If I try to install the 4_2_1 version or the newest 4_2_4, via the Task Manager, I get the same message.

I am trying to find the mentioned file to link to it, but I cannot find any .msi file, and even for the .exe files I cannot find one with 64 at the end.

Please help.

@Knutiverden, If Classic Shell 4.2.1 installer does not work for you to uninstall the older version, use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. See this post: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1741#p8875

Thank you for the replay.

Actually I forgot to mentioned it in my post, but I had already read the post you link to, and downloaded the program. But unfortunately I am not able to run it. I get a message called Windows Script Host, and it mentions a Microsoft VBScript - runtime error. To be honest, I do not understand what this is, but I am not able to run the program.

Try this manual method of unregistering and removing the old version: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4846#p20535

There are two releases of version 4.2.1. You need to use the same one you have installed. You can download both from here: http://classicshell.mediafire.com/folde ... 92/Archive

Thank You!

It worked. I did the manual unregistration and then installed the old version.

I am so happy to have my computer back working

Thanks Again
