 Post subject: 'group by type' fails

when i have a file open in an application, the file is locked and i try to change the view settings from 'list view' to 'list view' 'group by type' classic explorer locks.

Uninstall Classic Explorer and see if the problem remains.

How are you using Group By? The actual Group By functionality of Windows is not modified in any way by Classic Shell. It only gives you an Explorer toolbar button for Group By. If you added that and have trouble using it, let me know. The command you must modify it to after adding the Group By command is:
groupby type

But your file locking problem doesn't seem to be related to Classic Shell at all.
