Classic Shell: Forum

Hey there I'm really new to this and I didn't have time to see if there was a solution for this or not so I thought I'd just make a forum post to elaborate on my problem and see if there's a fix or workaround. I'll try to explain my problem in as much detail as possible.

When I installed Classic Shell - it installed under Local Disk C (which is my Solid State Drive w/ Windows 8.1) I have an extra two hard drives Local Disk A and Local Disk B. Since I installed Classic Shell under Local Disk C the search bar only searches under Local Disk C not A or B - is there any way I can add the Local Disk A and Local Disk B directories to the search function? Please let me know, and if you guys need any more information I'll be happy to provide. Thanks!

Perhaps those drives aren't indexed? Right click on the drive, and in the general tab there is a checkbox "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties' Make sure that is checked.

Then click the search box, go to the search tab (from the little arrow just below the close button) advanced options; change index locations and add your drives




Alternatively; if that doesn't work
Microsoft doesn't recommend using drives A: and B: (except for floppies/Dvd) and I'm not sure why.. but maybe windows doesn't search them? try changing them to another available letter?
Right click on 'This PC' then go to 'Manage'
Then on the Storage tab, click disk management, find your drive, right click and change drive letter

The drive where Classic Shell is installed has no relation to the search.

The start menu searches the contents of the Start Menu folders and the indexed files. As Jcee pointed out, make sure the indexing is enabled for those drives and that the folders you want are added to the indexed locations. I think by default only special folders, like My Documents are indexed, not the entire drives.

I agree that using A: and B: for drive letters is not recommended. There used to be some weird logic back in the IBM PC XT days to simulate both A and B when only a single floppy drive is present. Maybe some of that is carried over for backwards compatibility and can mess things up. There should be plenty of letters after C for your devices

I made sure both my Local Disk A and B had "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties" checked off. However I can't find the indexing location. I go to Classic Shell Settings, click on "Search Box" tab but I don't find any indexing options.

As a side note, I discussed the whole naming my hard drives A and B thing with a few friends as well and they recommended the same thing. However, when I built this computer I included a SATA Media Dashboard and included a Floppy Disk drive (for sentimental value lol) and they seem to be working after A,B,C accordingly - haven't had issues with flash drives as well. So I hope that's not the issue - I will change the names as a last resort however.

The indexing options are Windows settings. Type "index" in the start menu and look for Indexing Options under Settings.
