Hmm. I did some testing regarding this and observed the following:
For indexed files (Windows Search): ************************************* If from Windows Folder Options, "Don't show hidden files, folders or drives" is set, then Classic Start Menu shows hidden files ignoring that setting, Windows 7 Start Menu doesn't show them.
If "Show hidden files, folders and drives" is set, but "Hide protected operating system files" is checked, then Classic Start Menu correctly hides files which are marked hidden+system. The WSM behavior is the same.
For files (documents, music, pictures etc) whose path you type directly into the Start Menu (autocomplete feature): ************************************************************************************************************ If "Don't show hidden files, folders or drives" is set, then Classic Start Menu correctly hides hidden files, Windows 7 Start Menu shows them!
If "Show hidden files, folders and drives" is set, but "Hide protected operating system files" is checked, then also Classic Start Menu correctly hides files which are marked hidden+system. The WSM shows them.
