I just upgraded to Version 4.0.4. Suddenly all of my custom settings are gone! Any idea why this happened? Any way to get them back without redoing them again one at a time?

Thanks in advance.

What version you did upgrade from and on which Windows version? The settings are supposed to get migrated/preserved. If you upgraded from version 3.x, you can uninstall version 4.0.4 temporarily, put 3.x, save the settings as XML and then reinstall version 4.0.4. Then you can load the settings from the XML.

What version did you use prior to 4.0.4? Also, have you ever used versions older than 4.0 on the same computer?
Few people have reported the loss of settings and I'm trying to establish the exact conditions that lead to this problem.

The previous version was most likely 3.6.8 which was a new install on Lenovo laptop using Windows 7 Home premium. Not only did the Classic Shell setting revert to the defaults, but so did those for the Classic Start Menu, notably the "Start Menu Style."

From now on I will save my settings before installing a new version.

If you some reason the settings do not get migrated when upgrading from Classic Shell 3.x to 4.0, you can still get back your old settings by uninstalling the current version, and installing Classic Shell 3.6.8. After that backup the settings to XML and then reinstall Classic Shell 4.0.4. The settings for version 3.6.8 are stored in the registry at a different location than version 4.0.4 so will be preserved. After re-installing version 4.0.4, you can restore the backup XML.

This bug is fixed in 4.0.5 so the settings should get migrated when upgrading from 3.6.x.
