The "Status Bar->Show free space and file size" option in the settings dialog of Classic Explorer doesn't seem to work, or at least I don't understand what it's doing. I'm trying to replicate the behavior of XP Explorer, which seems ideal to me.

Specifically, in Windows XP, without selecting any items in an Explorer window, the number of items and the total size of all non folder items is shown at the bottom in the status bar. When items are selected, the number of items selected and the total size of all non folder items in the selection is shown in the status bar.

In the XP Recycle Bin, without selecting any items, the number of items and the total size of all items (including folders) is shown in the status bar. When items are selected, the number of items selected and the total size of all items (including folders) in the selection is shown in the status bar.

With Classic Explorer on Windows 7 and "Show free space and file size" enabled, without selecting any items in an Explorer window or the Recycle Bin window, the number of items but nothing else is displayed when nothing is selected. When items are selected, the number of items selected is shown along with the total size of all non folder items in the selection. However, there are some odd behaviors that I have noticed. 1) When folders and certain other file types such as *.url shortcuts are included in a selection, no information is given about the size of a selection. 2) If more than 15 non folder items are selected, no information is given about the size of the selection. 3) Some non folder file types don't give any information when selected. This latter seems to occur especially when the files have unrecognized extensions.

How much of this Classic Explorer behavior is intentional? How can I get Classic Explorer on Windows 7 --including the Recycle Bin window-- to behave like XP? Thanks for any help.

Show me a screenshot of your Explorer window.

Mostly likely you are looking at the Details pane. Press Alt+V in Windows 7's Explorer and check "Status bar" to turn it on.

Thanks for both your replies. @GauravK, you were right. I feel like an idiot. I didn't know the details bar was different from the status bar, and in fact, I didn't even have the status bar turned on. The actual status bar does work just like it does in XP, including the Recycle Bin.
