This has been driving me crazy. This behavior has to either be broken or else I'm missing a setting somewhere to make it work like it should.

When I move or copy a new file into a folder, the folder sort order is deselected (all column headers are un-highlighted). After the move or copy, the file sits within the folder in exactly the spot where I dropped it. In order to have it sorted in ascending order by file name, I'm required to:

1. Click on the Name column header. This selects Name, ascending as the sort order, but the files are not yet sorted. They remain as they were.

2. Click on the Name column again. This inverts the sort order and the files are then sorted into descending order.

3. Click on the Name column yet again and this finally gets them into the correct order.

Is there a way to have Explorer _not_ deselect the old sort order and to have files automatically sorted as new files are added to a folder?

I've switched back to the standard Windows Explorer. The behavior is the same, so at least it's not Classic Explorer's fault. Seems like it must be a Vista/Win7 thing that wasn't like that in XP.

That said, I'm finding that I actually prefer the behavior of the standard Windows Explorer better than Classic Explorer. Hard to put my finger on exactly why - it just feels more solid, and (although I could be imagining it) feels much snappier.

It sounds like you believe that Classic Explorer replaces Windows Explorer. It does not. It just adds some new features, like a toolbar and Up button. Each new feature has performance cost, some more than others. For example the feature that shows the total size of the selected files in the status bar needs some time to calculate it. It is up to you to decide if the cost is worth to you.

Depending on which view you are using in Windows Explorer, the auto sorting/arranging can be turned off (for some views) but it's always turned on for some views. Which view are you using?
