ClassicShell makes the jumping behavior better, but there's still one case where the navigation pane entries move out from under you, even in Win 8.1.

Specifically, if you close Explorer with the Network namespace expanded, then when you open Explorer again it will auto-expand Network again, after taking some seconds presumably to evaluate the machines that are reachable. It's at that moment that it can and often does scroll the list control entries in the navigation pane. Best case, it happens when you're not just about to click something. You can imagine the other case. It's maddening.

The workaround is to remember to close up Network by clicking on the little triangle to the left of it before closing Explorer, because then the next time you open it, it won't auto-expand.

But it occurs to me to ask: Is there any other workaround, or even the potential for a ClassicShell fix for this? Maybe a way to have ClassicShell always close up Network before closing Explorer?

Are you viewing a folder that is before or after Network in the tree?

Sorry about not getting back to you sooner. I'd forgotten I'd made this post.

It's before Network, up in the folder set that's rooted in This PC.

Wondering if you've ever had a chance to look this issue over, Ivo...

There are no plans to do anything about this. It is an internal behavior of Explorer. There is no way to detect when new network items are added.
