Hello,

I would like to modify the existing "Windows 8" skin to add icons to This PC, Documents, Downloads, etc. I have tried setting the icons manually via Customize Start Menu>Edit Item> Browse for Icon, with no luck. I have also tried using Resource Hacker to open the skin file and mess around with the settings. In particular I found a line that says "NO_ICON" and tried commenting it out, but compiling it as a saved copy back into the Skins folder, the new skin doesn't appear in the dropdown menu. Is there an easier way to do this? Thanks!

What style of the Start menu are you using?

I'm using the Windows 7 style. Do I have to be using another style to get the icons I want?

Yes, Windows 7 style does not support icons in the right hand side column. You can switch to Classic with two columns from the "Start Menu Style" tab. Then, any icons you set on the "Customize Start Menu" tab -> Edit Item > Browse for Icon, after switching the style will show in the 2nd column.

The main difference vs Windows 7 style is that search results are displayed in a sub-menu. Classic styles allow more flexible customization - you can add sub-items, move the search box and All Programs anywhere, add split button items, add sub-items as buttons too. Customization is more restricted in Windows 7 style. The search in Classic styles can also scroll up and down if there are lots of search results; in Windows 7 style, the search is restricted to the height of the main menu.
