Post subject:  Classic Shell 4.3.0 crashing Windows 7 Explorer.exe

Hi,

I have used Classic Shell for my Windows 7 (64-bit) machine for several years without any issues. I had updated to 4.3.0 before the hack took place and double checked what I had was unaffected (which is was, thank God) and started noticing Windows explorer.exe would crash and restart with the mswsock.dll file being targeted as the issue. This would happen only once during any Windows session and would only happen again if one were to restart/reboot Windows. Also, the crash would take place approximately 2 minutes after the login process, not at the Windows bootup waiting for a password entry.

According to a number of reports, the issue was clear with many tech support sites I visited. It appears the problem of the explorer.exe crashing was a conflict with a thing they call "ContextMenuHandlers" which is located in the registry at:

HKLM\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\

Under this location there exists all of the explorer right-click menu items you use everyday. Evidently, something changed as I have had the same add-ons (if you like) without incident.

My explorer.exe version is 6.1.7601.23537 dated 8/29/2016
My mswsock.dll version is 6.1.7601.23451 dated 5/11/2016

I downloaded a program called ShellExView from www.nirisoft.net and started disabling one item at a time until the crashing stopped. Unfortunately, it stopped when I uninstalled Classic Shell 4.3.0.

I still have version 4.2.5c. I have no interest to go to Windows 8.0/8.1 or 10, so do you think going back one version would be better or is there something else I need to do?

Thanks,
Chris

Please capture a crash dump with Classic Shell 4.3.0 installed (when it crashes Explorer.exe): viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6 so it can be fixed.

Hi Gaurav,

It appears, so far, upon re-installing version 4.3.0 after a full un-install, the problem is gone! Perhaps there was some corruption that took place and by completely removing Classic Shell and re-installing makes this explorer.exe crash go away.

At any rate, I did make that crash dump file in the registry per your request, so if it it does happen again, I can email that information.

Thanks!

Chris

Hi Gaurav,

May have found the problem! System has been solid now for nearly 5 days (longest time ever))! It appears the problem was with the IOBIT Uninstaller Pro v 6.xxx program. Once that was uninstalled, no more explorer.exe crashes and I have done somethings that would definitely cause a crash previously. Now seems very stable. BTW, I have had the Classic Shell installed all along, so it cannot be said that the problem was with the Classic Shell program now.
