Hi#I now have Windows 8, and using this Classic Shell as WIndows 7.

Problem is, the Pin to Start won't work. In fact it seems to duplicate the programs I am pinning, into the Programs submenu in the Start menu.

I just drag it up but it won't go into the top of the menu above the line. Classic Shell is up there, but I cannot put anything else in there.

I wondered if there is an option somewhere for this?

Also, how do you add My Music to the Start Menu, as that does not seem to even be in the list of buttons you can have - which is rather odd.

Simon

First open Start Menu settings, enable All Settings and go to the 'Special Items' tab and uncheck the option called "Show recent programs on top". That will make the menu show pinned shortcuts on top and recent programs below them. Next drag and drop whatever shortcuts you want to the pinned shortcuts area to pin them.

"Pin to Start" means "Pin to the Start screen". In version 3.6.7, pinning is only possible by dragging and dropping shortcuts. The next version 4.0 will introduce full Windows 7 like menu and "Pin to Start Menu" by right clicking. Version 4.0 is in beta currently.

Fantastic, that's got it.
What about Adding My Music as a link with My Documents and My Pictures?

To add "My Music" to the menu, in Start Menu settings, enable All Settings and go the "Customize Start Menu" tab. Scroll all the way down and locate "Custom" item. Drag it to the left column and position it where you want. Double click it and in the LINK field dropdown, choose "My Music". If you want to show as a link (without expanding it as a menu), check the option "Don't expand". Click OK twice to save changes.
The next version, 4.0, will also simplify addition of items like My Music etc so lesser steps will be required.

Superb. Even worked out Command is to open, and The one below creates it with a popout menu. Really really good.
Thanks a lot.
If you are familiar with Win 8, can you change the User Picture in the start menu, without having to do the silly 'shapes' for touchscreens?

The Start Menu doesn't yet support directly changing user picture. It shows the same picture as the one set by Windows.

On Windows 8, you have to open "PC Settings -> Personalize" (the Modern Control Panel) to change the user account picture. You can open "PC Settings" from the Start Menu's search box without having to use the silly touchscreen gestures. Unfortunately, once you get there, browsing to the correct folder from the "File Picker" to set the user picture inside Metro is really terrible.

If you are using a Microsoft Account on Windows 8, you can set the picture in your online profile at https://profile.live.com and it will change in the Start Menu as well.

That's what I mean. Once in there and you upload a different pic, you then have to go through 1, 2, 3 stages of touchscreen drawing things. Surely not everyone with Win 8 has a touchscreen so how do you add the pic, without doing that?

Try copy-pasting the user picture into %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures from Explorer. Then it will show up in the PC Settings: User Picture -> Browse screen.

Good news for you. Now the latest public beta version of Classic Shell which is available from the home page has proper 'Pin to Start Menu (Classic Shell)' in the right click menu. Try it if you are interested.
