Even though I have set the option to not display the Administrative Tools folder on the Start Menu in the Taskbar properties in Windows 7, it is still displaying this folder in Classic Start Menu. There is no option in the Classic Start Menu settings to display or not display Administrative Tools, and I can't find such a setting in any of the other setting menus. Am I missing something? Is this a Win7 glitch or a Classic Start Menu glitch?

Classic Start Menu has its own settings, it does not get affected by Windows 7 Start Menu settings. To remove Administrative Tools, go to Classic Start Menu settings, enable All Settings at the bottom, then go to Customize Start Menu tab. Locate AdminToolsItems in the left column, and press the Del key once. Click OK to save changes.

To add an Administrative Tools folder, the process is similar. On the Customize Start Menu tab, add a "Custom Command" (last in the right column) by dragging it to the left and position it where you want it. Then double click it in the left column and in the LINK field dropdown, choose Administrative Tools. Click OK twice to save changes.

I'm facing the same "problem" with Administrative Tools being present with Classic Start Menu. Unfortunately, it exists within the ProgramsMenu, so I'm not sure it's even possible to hide.

In truth I don't really need to hide the folder, but to rename it to something shorter like "Admin" or "Admin Tools". However, doing so may result in undesirable consequences because it's a system folder.

you can still rename it through classic shell without causing any problems:
right click the start button
choose settings
show advanced/all settings
click the 'customize start menu' tab
find the administrator tools item (it may be named CustomItem#) and double click it
Input whatever you want where it says "Label"
press ok and again.
Now it should display the text you typed

Ah but you see it's not in the settings.

ah, well an alternative would be to create a custom item, and make all the items within it children...
create a custom item(set its icon/description)
then create another custom item for each of the folders in it, with the link set to their location, and appropriate names/icons
the only problem with this is if anything directly in whatever folder the menu labeled 'programs' references.. it wont automatically be added

I found a better solution: remove the built in ProgramsMenu altogether and create my own folders with those existing shortcuts in them. I now have two folders: Admin and Apps. My menu is now more efficient as I only have to deal with one level of cascading sub-menus for each!

Edit: looks like we both had the same idea :D
