I have Windows 8.1 with classic shell. I want to upgrade to Windows 10 do I need to knock out clasc Shell that I have before I upgrade

Just update to the latest version of Classic Shell and then you can update to Windows 10.

After you upgrade Windows, Classic Shell will pop up to ask to update itself. Click OK, then give it admin access, and then you are all set.
