Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so I'm not sure if these issues I'm experiencing have come up before. If they have, please just point me to the thread(s) and I apologize for duplicating effort.

I have been a long-term user of Classic Shell (since Win8 was released) and have recently upgraded to Win10. I wasn't happy with Win10's menu system so I downloaded and installed Classic Shell 4.2.4. It is working just as it had been with Win8, except for the following exceptions:

1. Right-clicking on a task bar active icon (i.e. a running program) no longer gives me a menu of actions (like Close). I've tried changing a few settings in CS but to no avail. What am I missing?
2. This might be a Win10 issue. When I dismount a USB-device, like a flash drive, I no longer get an acknowledgement that the device can be "safely removed". I'm using the USB device icon usually found in the "hidden icons" menu screen.

I find CS a very useful program and have recommended it to others who are struggling with Win10's menu system. Keep up the good work!
Paul.

For #1, see this article: http://winaero.com/blog/get-a-classic-t ... s-like-xp/ You will need 7+ Taskbar Tweaker to restore verbs like Close, Maximize, Minimize, Restore, Move, Size. Set the first option "Right click" to "Standard window menu".

#2 is a Windows 10 problem. It may be possible that the Metro UI is not functioning correctly on your system. To see the old Windows 7-style balloon notification, you will have to do this tweak: http://winaero.com/blog/enable-balloon- ... le-toasts/ and then restart Windows.

Gaurav,

Many thanks for your help.

I have downloaded and used 7+ TT and this has restored a context menu for my desktop taskbar icons. So, problem #1 has been solved.

Problem #2 is a different matter. "gpedit.msc" is not available within the standard pathlist for the Run shell. I have found it in 4 places under C:\Windows\WinSxS\{amd64/x86}_microsoft-windows-g... and copied it to C:\Windows\System32. It now attempts to run but issues a "MMC cannot open the file ..." error message. I have checked the permissions on this copied file and find them identical with other files, like devmgmt.msc, diskmgmt.msc, services.msc. I suspect that there are more files to copy, but haven't a clue as to which ones. Can you help, here? Or, is it that Win10m now has a different application to manage group policies?

Paul.

Do you have a Windows 10 Home? gpedit is not available on Home editions.

Only Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise will have gpedit.msc. If you are running Windows 10 Home, open Regedit.exe and go to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Create a DWORD value: EnableLegacyBalloonNotifications and set it to 1 and restart Windows.

Gaurav,

Again, many thanks for that workaround. It works, although the balloon appears in the top LH corner of the screen. I had to create the "Explorer" key to do it, though, and a restart was necessary - which makes sense.

I think this sorts out my issues with the task bar, so we can declare this posting as closed with success.

Paul.

Yes the balloon appearing in the top left corner is a Windows 10 bug which I don't think Microsoft will care to fix.

Thanks for that explanation. I guess I'll have to live with it.
