I use Classic Shell under Windows 10. In the Windows 10 Settings tab of Classic Start Menu Settings, I set a custom taskbar color. The problem is, while buttons below the mouse change to a lighter version of the set colour, the background colour of the active window's taskbar button are of the original colour. So the taskbar vs. the active window's taskbar button is an ugly combination while the button label (which for me is the Aero Lite theme's black) is not well visible on the active button. I can't change it without messing up titlebar colours.

Go to Windows 10 Settings app -> Personalize -> Colors. There is a setting called "Show color on Start, taskbar, action center..". Toggle it. Then active button's color should be different.

Perhaps I wasn't clear, so in a little more detail:
  • If the "Show color on Start, taskbar, action center" setting is on, then the active taskbar button background colour is some function of the accent colour I set in Personalize -> Colors. But I can't set an accent colour that both looks nice and results in an active taskbar button background colour harmonising with my Classic Shell setting for taskbar colour.
  • If the "Show color on Start, taskbar, action center" setting is off, then the active taskbar button background colour is the Windows 10 default which is almost black (16 16 16) which is even worse.
  • In neither case does the Classic Shell taskbar colour setting have any effect on the active taskbar button background colour. I think it should, at least when the "Show color on Start, taskbar, action center" setting is off. Especially considering that the Classic Shell setting does influence the background colour of inactive taskbar buttons under the (hovering) cursor pointer.
