To exit the Start Menu, right click the Start button and choose Exit. To prevent it from starting automatically with Windows, open Settings and in the search box of the settings window, type: start auto and uncheck the option "Start automatically for this user". Click OK.

You can also reconfigure the default behavior so that left clicking opens the Windows start menu instead of the Classic Shell one. It's under the Controls Tab. That will let you run the start menu normally while still leaving any other tweaks on, in case you decided to override the taskbar color or something like that.
