Hi,

We are deploying Windows 7 x64 and Zenworks 11 on our network and require Classic start menu with locked down with Windows Classic set. Is this possible? Currently we are deploying ClassicShellSetup64_3_6_5.msi with the following options which work fine:

ADDLOCAL=ClassicStartMenu
START_MENU_FOLDER=0


But whenever a new user logs in and clicks on the start button they get the Setting for Classic Start menu appear (can we stop this from happening?
Also users can right click on the start button and change the settings, can we prevent access to the setting?
Hope this is possible.

Yes, you can set EnableSettings=0 in the registry. Look in the Administrative Settings section of the documentation.

Hi,
Thanks for the information The registry setting that I setup worked but when I log off log in as a user the registry settings do not take affect and then when I log back in all the settings have vanished? any reason why this is happening?

Maybe you added that to HKCU, which is per user. You need to use HKLM to apply to all users.

So to make it clear, you need to export the settings from HKCU, edit the reg file in a text editor to change all instances of HKCU to HKLM and then merge it back. If the value of the setting "ShowedStyle" is 1 in HKCU (Classic Shell 3.6.x) or "ShowedStyle2": DWORD value 1 for CS4, then they won't get the style prompt when they click the Start button the first time.

And "EnableSettings" set to 0 for HKLM will prevent access to the settings.

The EnableSettings set to 0 in HKLM worked great for me! Is there a registry setting that will also prevent the 'exit' menu item from appearing when right clicked to keep the users from stopping it? (I know our help desk will be swamped with 'How do I get it back?" because they may think it is a new way to shutdown the PC).

I just answered my own question! I took a chance and created a new key called "EnableExit" and set it to 0 just like the settings, and imagine that! It works - It removes the Exit option when right-clicked...and for all users too if placed in HKLM.

Classic Shell 4.0.4 introduces Group Policy support for its own settings. The file, C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\PolicyDefinitions.zip includes the policy definitions. If you have an Active Directory domain, extract the files to %logonserver%\sysvol\%userdnsdomain%\policies\PolicyDefinitions\ or whatever your Group Policy Central Store is. For Local Group Policy, extract them to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder.

Group Policy!!! We were looking at your product and others but now...winner, winner chicken dinner. Group policy configuration support, I love it. This is the primary reason we do NOT allow firefox no native gpo support.
