Classic Shell enhancement/feature wishes have popped up now and then in this forum. I thought I'd try starting a thread to collect them in one place.

I'll start it off...

;)

WISHES:

1. Create a separate database of wishes on this forum showing clear feature definition, date of wish, solution description if found, and date of solution by developers once provided. Be able to sort wishes by category, or search on keyword.

2. I wish apps could be sorted by category, with hotkey to flip-flop between category and alpha sort.

What is a "category"?

I would define category based on function of the app. There may be various levels, general to specific.

For example, a music app is clearly just that, but it is also part of the more general "media" category.

Other general categories would include security, office, programming, photo, etc.

Specific examples would include encryption, anti-virus, spreadsheet, audio.

Download sites use categories. App stores use categories.

Sometimes I want an app to meet a specific need, but can't recall the app based on name. Also, sometimes an app is sorted by developer name, not app name.

For example, perhaps I want to perform an XHD analysis. Instead of remembering to look up "Seagate", I'd look up "hard drive" and find "Seagate Seatools".

Perhaps the categories could be based on a hierarchical tree for auto default that could be developed and shared on this forum, but each user could still add custom local keyword(s).

An app could also be found in more than one category.

Not aware of any programs that do this.

Windows 8 has it but it looks cluttered.

Well the Start screen does have some interesting options to sort apps and programs. For "Programs" (desktop apps), we only need Sort by date installed. Sort By Name is already there, the Start Menu already lists the most used apps as well, and category for desktop apps is something that will have to be manually defined by the end user.

For Modern apps, Sort by date installed and Sort by Category would be possible if there was a way to fetch the category from whereever Windows 8/10 stores it (Photo, Productivity, Shopping, Tools etc).

KDE's Kickoff Application Launcher has both the Applications Tab (Sort by Category) and the Classic Menu Style and you can switch between them at any time.

You can see them here
