Post subject:  Point to start menu folder displaying not a sub-menu
hi all, we use the "classic start menu with two collumns" style. Classic Shell Version 4.04
is it possible to add a custom Folder to the start menu without displaying it as a Sub Folder?
e.g. pointing to a specific Folder and Display its content directly in the start menu without the need to expand this folder.

Look for the Group Policy setting called "Common Start Menu folder" (for all users) and "Start Menu folder" (per-user). The 2 folders you specify here (or it can be the same folder for both settings) will have their contents directly listed in the main menu. You must restart Classic Start Menu by right clicking the Start button -> Exit and starting it again from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe.

If the folder(s) specified here do not include a Programs subfolder, you may also need change the policy settings called "Common Programs folder" and "Programs folder".

so I changed all four Policies to locked to this value %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\start menu\Program (but nothing is displayed after gpupdate, reboot an logon.
where is the mistake?

Do I also have to Change "Customize Start Menu" in the Settings box for classic Shell? If yes, what entry e.g. "Apps" or "Programs" must I add. I also publish These Settings via GPO "menu items for classic menu with two columns"
when I set all values to "unlocked" the Programs Folder is displayed as a submenu...

I Need to publish both as one menu: the Content of a Sub Folder of the all users start menu and the per-user start menu with the Sub Folder "program" directly as the Default menu.

Are you sure there isn't a typo or anything in the path? I am able to specify any folder on my PC for all 4 policies. After exiting and restarting the menu (full system restart is not required), it shows me the contents of that folder in the Main menu.

The MenuItems setting controls what is shown outside the area of the Start Menu folder in a single or multiple columns if you have a column break added.

finally I am not far away from a final solution I think.
I get one piece of the final start menu listed directly without a sub menu.
therefore I pointed the GPO "Start menu Folder" to a certain %appdata% path. Additional I Need a second path from the all users profile path to be listed directly together with the ones from the per user start menu.


should look like this:


010 - Office Tools (Directory in the All Users Profile)
020 - Multimedia Apps (Directory of the per-user Profile)





I'm not almost Aware of the 4 GPOs you mentioned, where to put in the All Users path and where to put in the per-user path

For "Common Start Menu folder", specify %allusersprofile%\somefolder.
For "Start Menu folder", specify %userprofile%\somefolder.

For "Common Programs folder" and "Programs folder", specify what you want to be shown inside the "Programs" submenu. If you don't want to show the Programs submenu at all, remove the item called "Programs" from the Customize Start Menu tab.

that das not work for me.
I changed GPO "Common Start Menu folder", %public% (just for testing).
and For "Start Menu folder", %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\start menu\programs"

I only get the users menu directly publsihed, the other one is not recongnized, no mater which path I put in the "Common Start menu Folder" GPO, only one is shown

Can you export the contents of this registry key to a .REG file and upload it here?
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IvoSoft\ClassicStartMenu

I will try to merge it and see if some different setting is causing an issue.

On my PC, both %appdata%\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs and %public% are shown in the main menu as expected. Maybe the folder that doesn't show up doesn't have the right permissions on your PC.

well I use an 2008R2 Terminalserver, but that should not be the Problem.
opening %public% via Windows Explorer works perfekt
you just imported the reg hives and it worked?
did you test with an admin user? which classic Shell Version did you use?

Yes I imported the reg hives and restarted the Start Menu. It worked. My user account is an admin one with UAC on.

unfortuantely displaying 2 different folders as one start menu does not work in my scenario. maybe it works not that way with Version 4.04...?
I found a workaround in placing a virtual link (mklink) in the per user folder pointing to the all users folder. not nice but a first solution

The ability to redirect Start Menu and Programs folders was introduced in Classic Shell version 4.0.4 itself, so it should work. Regardless, I recommend you to upgrade to the latest version, 4.1.0. All your settings will be preserved.
