Post subject:  Start Menu v4.0.4 - v4.1.0 Change log

I am currently using Classic Start Menu (actually all of Classic Shell) v4.0.4. Earlier this week, in my Start Menu I clicked on Classic Shell Update, and discovered that v4.1.0. was out. The Classic Shell Update window listed the following improvement items (I have added the numbers):

1) - Improved support for Windows 8.1 Spring Update
2) - Improved support for high resolution displays
3) - Improved support for touch displays
4) - New button for the Explorer toolbar to toggle the navigation pane
5) - Added support for animated start buttons
6) - Multiple minor improvements and bugfixes

Item 2) is relevant for my Dell Precision M4700 laptop, although I haven't noticed any problems with my 1920x1080 high resolution display. Item 4) might be useful.

But items 1), 3), and 5) don't apply to me because I am using Win7sp1, and I don't use the touch pad, and I don't know what an animated start button is (my Windows7sp1 animated settings generally are disabled). And I have no idea whether item 6) would be useful for Win7sp1.

On the other hand, for me, installing v4.10 onto v4.0.4 would include improvements also included in v4.0.5-v4.0.6.

[Most of the improvements are in v4.0.5; v4.0.6 was a fix for a single v4.0.5 bug (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2432). At http://www.classicshell.net/, General Release 4.0.6 is not listed. Earlier today, in previous versions of this post, I wrote that v4.0.6 had apparently been replaced by Mar 31st, 2014 - General Release 4.0.5, but that is wrong. In a variety of other classic.net locations, v4.0.5 and v4.0.6 both are listed - for example, at http://www.mediafire.com/folder/v8cv2m87ama92/archive.

[Nevertheless, at viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2398 there is a current list of v4.0.5 improvements.]

That list will help me --- and maybe others --- decide whether to take the time to move to from v4.0.4 to v4.0.6 (4.0.5 plus the v4.0.6 bug fix) or to v4.1.0.

P.S. At http://www.classicshell.net - Apr 20th, 2014, General release 4.1.0 is out - with the news that
"It improves the support for Windows 8.1 Spring Update and contains some stability fixes. More details here", Ivo wrote that
"If you are currently using version 4.0.4, 4.0.5 or 4.0.6 you may not get a notification about the new version. It is recommended that you upgrade to the latest version manually."

But I don't know how to do --- or how not to do --- a manual upgrade. My standard procedure, with Classic Shell and all other programs and utilities, is to download the file and put it into a special folder in Partition D:, and then click on it to install it. Would that qualify as a manual upgrade?

For me, manual upgrade (as distinguished from something else about which I am ignorant) is an unknown concept.

Yes downloading the installer by visiting www.classicshell.net and starting it by double clicking it is called a manual upgrade. An automatic upgrade is when Classic Shell's Update component automatically checks for an update and notifies you and if you choose to upgrade, then it will automatically download the installer for you and copy it to your Downloads folder. After that, you must still double click the installer to start the upgrade process.

Here's the version history: http://www.classicshell.net/history/
For people currently using 4.0.4 I made the "what's new" text to combine the new features of 4.0.5, 4.0.6 and 4.1.0.
If you are using version 4.0.6 then "what's new" will only include #1 and #6 from your list.

Ivo:

Thanks for clarifying that the Classic Shell Update window's "what's new" list is customized for the Classic Shell user.

I am a bit embarrassed that I had forgotten the information at http://www.classicshell.net/history/.
