Post subject: | FIRST POST Windows 8.1 update Question |
Hi Everyone this is my first post so be kind ![]() I am totally confused on this whole Windows 8 to 8.1 to 8.1 with Update 1 maybe you can help clear this up. FIRST off on my computer I am running the Classic Shell (vs 3.6.8) for about 7 months, 99.9% of the time and love it. I can toggle to Windows 8 but don't like it (have not updated to Windows 8.1, don't want to loose Classic Shell) . I do want to continue to get Microsoft updates. What do I HAVE to do, will I continue to getting updates the way I am running now or not, really confused. 67 years old an "Tech Handicapped" ![]() THANKS Ralph |

If you are on Windows 8 you will continue receiving updates for years to come. If you are on Windows 8.1 you need to install update 1 to receive future updates. |

I do have Windows 8 but read that you must update to Windows 8.1 by May 13 to continue to get updates . Is that correct ?? Should I update to the windows 8.1 and update 1 ? If I decide to do that do I need to do anything to Classic Shell I know I am running an older version. Thanks |

No, this is not correct, like I stated above. It is up to you if you want to switch from 8 to 8.1. If you do, you should get update 1. You should also switch to the latest Classic Shell 4.1.0. |

Sorry for all the questions just like Classic Shell so much don't want to mess it up. Thanks |

According to the Windows 8 support lifecycle policy (http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/ ... =Windows+8), Windows 8.0 is supported for 24 months after Windows 8.1's General Availability. Windows 8.1 reached general availability on October 17, 2013 so Windows 8.0 should be supported for at least 2 years after that, meaning up to October 2015. Btw, if you do decide to upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Store app (which is free to do), Update 1 will be automatically included. |

Will I still be able to use Classic Shell the way I am using it now if I update to 8.1 +Update 1 ?? So all I have to do is upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Store app (which is free to do), Update 1 will be automatically included, nothing else ?? Are these steps correct or am I missing something ?? Un-install CS Update to Windows 8.1 from store app Re-install CS Make sure I have vs. 4.1.0 update THANKS |

You don't need to uninstall Classic Shell. Just upgrade to the latest version of Classic Shell first (which you said you already did) and then upgrade to Windows 8.1 from the Store. Update 1 will be included. Classic Shell will continue to work after the Windows upgrade. As an extra precaution, you can take a backup of your customizations by opening Classic Shell settings and clicking Save to XML file under the Backup button. |

Ok sounds good . The part about "As an extra precaution, you can take a backup of your customizations by opening Classic Shell settings and clicking Save to XML file under the Backup button." That is saved on my computer not on a flash drive correct ? Sorry if that is a stupid question. I'm not too up on this stuff. THANKS |

Save it where you can access it later for sure in case something goes wrong with the upgrade although even if the upgrade fails, Windows should safely roll back. |
