About 2 weeks ago, several people (including me) had problems with Explorer after installing 4.0.5. The problem was quickly fixed. This afternoon, about 6 or 7 hours ago, I started having many problems with Explorer, and I'm wondering if Classic Shell could be the cause.

Problems:
1. going to my computer icon on the desktop, usually it shows "empty" then the green bar starts going across, gets slower and slower, and quits making progress.

2. Right-click on a file or folder and select Properties - takes 5-10 minutes to come up.

3. Sorting files (by date, name, type) doesn't work (maybe it will if I wait long enough - I don't know)

4. In view - all of the options (details, large icons, etc) are disabled.

5. Sometimes other things, like folders or the control panel have the problem with the green bar.

6. Once in a while I've had icons disappear. I have a batch file to flush the icon cache so Windows rebuilds them. Today that has happened 20-30 times.

Could Classic Shell be the cause?

There was a known Explorer crashing issue with 4.0.5 which was fixed in 4.0.6. Upgrade to it.

If you believe Classic Shell is the cause of a slowdown, you can try temporarily disabling it. To disable the Classic Explorer addon for Explorer, go to Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Programs tab -> Manage Add-ons. Find "Classic Explorer Bar" and "ExplorerBHO Class" and make sure they are both disabled. Then log off and log on again and see if the slowdowns persist. If they still do, then the problem is not caused by the Explorer component. Similarly, you can right click the Start button and click Exit to close the Start Menu. If the slowdowns persist with Classic Shell's components not running, then something else is causing them.
