Today, I noticed that CS now displays my account picture as just the generic black & white icon. I'm connected to my MS account, but tried both logging out and switching user to another MS account (picture is correct) as well as a local account (picture is correct). The login screen as well as Control Panel -> User Accounts display the correct account picture.

I'm running Win8.1 Pro x64, with everything up to date; CS v4.0.4.

Any thoughts on what broke?

Thanks.

What about the PC Settings app? Can you try setting the picture again from PC Settings?

I just tried that; made no difference.

Some other users have reported this in the past but I have been unable to reproduce this. I also have a Microsoft account. Check here in the Registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer to see if you have a UseDefaultTile value and delete it if it exists.

Nope, the UseDefaultTile key didn't exist. Wish I could point to something I did (changed settings, installed new application, ...) or that was done to me (Windows update, application update, ...) but I don't believe either occurred recently.

If you click on the user picture to get to the User Accounts control panel item, do you see the custom picture or the generic picture?

The picture in the Accounts control panel is the correct one. That's what's confusing me. Seems as though CS is having trouble accessing it.

Well, there is no documented way to get the picture. I am using some code I found online long time ago. It is likely that it doesn't work in all cases. I'll see if I can reproduce the problem.

Starting with Classic Shell 4.2.0, there is a dedicated setting to change the user picture. It overrides the Windows user account picture and you can specify your own.
