I'm a new member. Have installed Windows 8.1 and then Classic shell. My problem now: When I want to shut down, shut down happens but after 5-10 sec. my PC boots automatically again. I couldn't solve the problem. When I deinstalled Classic Shell "shut down" works without automatically rebooting. Please help

What's most probably happening is that some program is waking up your PC again. On Windows 8/8.1, when you do a regular Shutdown, what it does is actually it logs you out and then hibernates. Microsoft calls this Hybrid Shutdown/Fast Startup. You can go to Control Panel -> Power Options and uncheck the option "Turn on Fast Startup". Thereafter when you shut down using Classic Start Menu, the PC should remain off.

Alternatively, try holding down the Shift key on the keyboard while clicking "Shut down" from the Classic Start Menu. Pressing Shift while clicking Shut Down does a full shutdown (like Windows 7 and earlier did).

However, disabling fast startup is only a workaround because when you disable fast startup and do a full shutdown instead, your PC may take longer to boot. If you can find out what program is causing your PC to wake up, that will allow you to keep fast startup enabled and still shut down as usual and keep Classic Shell installed. Refer to this article: http://www.ghacks.net/2013/12/31/find-pc-wakes-stop/ and try the various steps it covers to find out what is waking up your PC. It may be some task in Task Scheduler too. Open Task Scheduler and Event Viewer from Administrative Tools to find out what is waking up, try disabling wake timers etc.

Now I have another problem. When I shut down with holding the shift key, Windows shuts down correctly. But after a new start classic shell is disappeared and the normal windows 8.1 button is back. In software "Classic shell" is installed - but it does not start with windows. I installed several times and classic shell works until a new start, - then I have the old windows 8.1 button back.

If you upgraded from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 in-place via the Store, then you need to do a Repair installation of Classic Shell (run the installer of the Classic Shell version you've got and choose Repair). Then it should start properly.

The next version of Classic Shell will bring a more reliable way to start every time at startup.

I upgraded via the store. I started the repair installation serveral times - but without sucsess. Always when I shut down Windows reboots automatically after a few seconds. But now always "Classic Shell" disappears after shut down and I have the normal 8.1 start button . But if there is no solution I wait for the next version.

Another solution is to just place a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe in your startup folder at %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

1. Open File Explorer and go to C:\Program Files\Classic Shell.
2. Right click ClassicStartMenu.exe and click Copy.
3. Press the Win+R keys to open the Run dialog.
4. Type: shell:Startup into the Run box and press Enter.
5. Right click in an empty area of the window that opens and click Paste Shortcut.

Now Classic Start Menu will start automatically at startup.

Thanks for your help. Classic shell starts now. The only fault is the automatically rebooting after shut down. I could not find a program which causes this. But with the shift key holded shut down works. If you have another idea or if a newer version fixes this let me know.

Nope, the problem is with some program on your PC you have installed that is waking up, or Windows Update settings or Power Options settings, or some Device Manager hardware settings. Check the article I linked to above to determine what is waking up. It's not a bug in Explorer or Classic Shell. Something is waking the PC.

I can not agree what you wrote. Because the problem exists only when I have installed the "Classic shell". When I uninstall "Classic Shell" Windows 8.1 shut down with the rigth click on the new windows 8.1 "startbutton" and there on shut down. Shut down makes then no rebooting !!

I did some testing and this looks like flaw in the Windows 8.1 Startup. It doesn't seem to do a hybrid shut down at all if you using the Start button's right click (context) menu. It always does a full shut down!! This makes you lose the benefits of fast startup.

So this is not a bug in Classic Shell. You can either use Shift+click or disable Fast Startup from Power Options. If you disable Fast startup, then you don't need to use shift+Shutdown.

To prove that it's not a bug in Classic Shell, temporarily enable Fast Startup and then press Win+I -> Power -> Shut Down. Your PC will still restart/wake up on its own. Or press Alt+F4 on the Desktop and Shutdown while Fast startup is enabled.

Sorry, in the Power Option from my PC isn't a possibility "Fasr Startup". So I can't disable. I think a shutdown with shift key. Thanks for your help

Now I found th eoption "Fast startup". I'm sorry but I have a german Win 8.1 and I first couldn't find where to disable the Faststart. Now , if it is disabled the PC shutdown works also with Classic shell. However I coudn't understand why with the "normal" Windows 8.1 "Faststart" can be unable and shutdown and everthing works. Only when I work with Classic shell shutdown with "Fast startup unable" makes the problems ?

Are you saying that Shutdown from the Win+X menu does a full shutdown, but from the charms it does a hybrid shutdown? What about Alt+F4?

Yes. Shutdown from Win+X menu always does a full shutdown even if Fast Startup is enabled. But from the Charms, or Alt+F4 it always does a hybrid shut down unless Shift is held down in which case it does a full shut down.

When I shut down from the charms (with Fast startup enabled) instead of the right click menu my PC reboots automatically ...when Classic shell is installed !!! After uninstalled Classic shell and shut down from the charm (with Fast startup enabled) the PC shuts down and no automatically reboot happens !!!
So I think my Windows 8.1 and Classic shell are in any way incombatibel. So I live with this little problem. Thanks for all your help.

This problem also happened to me, when i do shutdown on classic shell it will do the standard shutting down procedure but the power button of my laptop is still "ON" then after a min or so it will boot back to the desktop again. My fixing procedure is when it goes back to my desktop i wait a few mins then i will click restart button in classic shell after restart it will go back to desktop then click shutdown it will shutdown normally, it happened to me like 4-5 times, but now i don't experience it anymore. :)

P.S. i just wanna ask if a program or a system program causes it to boot again? Thanks in Advance. :D
