There is a hack to get the Windows 7 vertical taskbar as thin as the horizontal one (when small icons are used):

However, this doesn't work in Windows 8. Can you do something about that?

Well there is good news. The latest 7+ Taskbar Tweaker (4.4.2) removes the minimum width restriction the vertical Taskbar on the side has. It has an setting in 'Advanced Options' for that. :)
