Post subject:  Classic Start "Update and Shutdown" Button Not Working

[ I did a search but could not find this as a reported issue, so I'm sorry if it's not something new and it has been reported before and I missed it. ]

When I get Windows updates and the Shutdown button turns into an "Update and Shutdown" button instead, it never actually runs the Windows updates, it just shuts down. In order for the Windows updates to actually be installed, I have to open up the pop-up menu next to the Shutdown button and select "Update and Restart" and then Windows updates normally.

I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit and Classic Star Menu 4.0.2 with the Windows 7 menu look. I don't know if this would matter or not, but I have only installed and am running Classic Star Menu, not Classic Shell or Classic IE or any of the other programs in the bundle.

When you choose "Update and Shutdown", the start menu calls the system shutdown function and gives it an undocumented setting to install the updates. On Windows 7 that setting is only supported by the Shutdown operation and it has no effect for Restart. In Windows 8 I'm pretty sure it worked for both. It is possible that for 8.1 only Restart is supported. I need to run some tests.

Yes I remember testing it on Windows 8.0 and it was working. I tried it on Windows 8.1 since I had some patches from Windows Update pending to be installed for this month. In Windows 8.1, clicking Update and Shutdown seems to perform a hybrid shutdown. Shift+clicking 'Update and Shutdown' performs a full shutdown. In either case, it isn't installing updates and then doing a full shutdown.

In Windows 7, Update and Shutdown continues to work as expected - installs updates before shutting down.

Well, then. I better disable that feature in 8.1.

Yes, when there are updates the start menu will do a full and not hybrid shutdown.
