Hi !
I have already found many hints about installing classic start menu without admin rights, already extracted the installation to a directory

Classicshellsetup_4_0_2.exe extract32
msiexec /a classicshellsetup32_4_0_2.msi TARGETDIR=C:\tmp\cs
Then I tried to call ClassicStartMenu.exe manually, and got no reaction ?! I called from cmd shell and the program exits without any visible reaction

Can anybody please help me what's missing ?

thx,

max

Classic Shell cannot be installed without admin rights and it is really recommended that you use the installer and install it on whichever PC with admin permissions. The MSI can be extracted from the EXE installer but it still requires admin rights. The Explorer and IE components require DLL registration which is impossible without admin rights. There is also now a Start Menu helper DLL which installs to System32 which also requires registration, otherwise you won't get 'Pin to Start Menu' item.

If you wish to use the Classic Start Menu without admin rights, you can copy the files for the Start Menu from an existing installation. Those files are ClassicStartMenu.exe, ClassicStartMenuDLL.dll, StartMenuHelperL10N.ini, StartMenuL10N.ini, ClassicShell.chm and of course the Skins directory. Note that even if you copy the files, you must respect copyright and the End User License Agreement which you accepted when you installed Classic Shell. The Start Menu skins are copyrighted.

Hi,

Thank you for the info, that sounds not so good
It's clear to respect the End User License Agreement.

For the start menu, copy to which directory ?

max

Well since you wish to avoid admin permissions, copy to any directory which does not require UAC elevation. :)

Start ClassicStartMenu.exe and then press the Start button. Place a shortcut to it in your Startup folder so it will start every time Windows starts. To open its settings, it has a settings parameter: ClassicStartMenu.exe -settings.

Here are the rest of the parameters:

Hi, sorry bothering you again

That is what I already tried, I see the application in the taskmanager as 32bit (I have a 64Bit via Remote Desktop)
But the Start Menu is unchanged. ClassicStartMenu.exe -settings doesn't open anything.

thx,

Max

Ah! Then you are running the wrong version. On a 32-bit Windows system, you must copy Classic Shell files from a 32-bit Windows installation. On a 64-bit Windows system, you must copy over 64-bit Classic Shell files from another 64-bit OS where Classic Shell is installed. The installer for Classic Shell contains both 32-bit and 64-bit binaries so depending on whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, it installs the appropriate files.

Hi
The extract64 is not working with the actual version of classicshell :(

I get the error message
The procedure entry point SetProcessDPIAware could not be located in the dynamic link library USER32.dll

The installer requires at least Windows Vista, however the software requires at least Windows 7.

So the extraction cannot be done on Windows XP.
