Post subject: | Slow opening of classic start menu due to external HDD's |
Hi all, I've been using classic start menu on windows 8 for some time now, and one thing I noticed is that it sometimes is slow to open, even when my computer has been on for hours (and thus is fully started) without any program's open. I recently traced this issue to my external (usb) hdd's. Apparently, when they go in sleep (i.e. stop rotating) they have to power up first, before the menu can open. I don't fully understand why this is the case, but I was wondering if there is any option to stop this (i.e. still open the menu without waiting for the hdd's to power up). Of course, I could disconnect my hdd's, but since I use them quite a lot, this isn't really convenient. As this is a laptop, putting them into the pc isn't an option either. Anybody has an idea or at least the same experience? And is this a bug, or is there some option to turn it off? |

Does the start menu link to any files on the external drives? |

Thanks for the quick reply! It doesn't link directly. However, it links to word, powerpoint etc. which have some files on the external disks in their 'recently opened' (so if you hover over the link it shows those files) and 'computer' is also a link. When opening computer (i.e. explorer) you of course see both the external disks. |

Have you noticed the slowdown to be related to opening these menus? Like the Word jumplist or the Computer folder? If the slowdown is more than a few seconds, you can use the following instructions to capture dumps: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6 |

Thank you. I've been trying to find a moment in which the hdd's slow down, but haven't had any for now. As soon as it does, I'll see if the slowdown is related to the menu's. I'll keep you updated! |

I just found out that the opening of these 'recently opened' files in word etc. when hovering over them are the reason for the slow startup. When I click on the start button and immediately go to word for example, the whole menu freezes until the HDD has started (when a file in the recently opened is in the list). Is there some way to fix this, possibly by not showing the recently opened list? |

You can disable the jumplists from the settings. It cannot be done per program though. |

Thank you very much! I was afraid that the 'normal' recent documents files would also be disabled, but it seems they are not, that's nice ![]() |
