Post subject:  using classic shell with win8.1 in a computer learning lab?

Sorry, if this is formatted poorly. I'm on my mobile.

I am contemplating using classic shell menu in a computer lab where the students all have various operating systems at work or home. The machines would be running win 8.1 but I'd like to do training for those who use win 7, or use it at work. The students are beginners to intermediate, but mostly beginners.

I'm not as concerned about xp or Vista. I will still have a few xp machines around.

But because my instruction to date on win8 has encouraged students to use the default start menu, I'm wondering whether classic shell will hinder my win8 students?

However I do need to address the needs of my win7 students. Is there a method to "hide" classic shell menu without uninstalling?

Any others experiences would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I can think of two options:
1) Uncheck "Start automatically for this user" for the student's account. Then your own account will still have the start menu and the student's won't
2) Change most controls (Win key, mouse click) to open the start screen. Leave yourself an obscure key combination like Shift+Win or Ctrl+Alt+Q so you can still open the start menu when you need it

Thank you for your expertise. I'll try your suggestions.
But it looks like you "hit the nail" on the head with your solution.
Thank you.
