| Post subject: | Menu redirection using Classic Shell |
I'm trying to use Classic Shell to redirect my Start Menu on a Windows 7 client system to a Share on my Windows 2008 server. When I first login with a new profile, the menu loads fine and quick. When I logoff and back on again, I get a short menu. There's a delay in pulling the menu since if I remain logged in, the menu gets redirected to the share after about 5 minutes. I checked the Event logs and noticed the following: Log Name: System Source: Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy Date: 9/9/2013 1:26:34 PM Event ID: 1112 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: User: contents removed Computer: contents removed Description: The Group Policy Client Side Extension Folder Redirection was unable to apply one or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup or user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish completely before the next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow startup and boot performance. Log Name: Application Source: Microsoft-Windows-Folder Redirection Date: 9/9/2013 1:26:34 PM Event ID: 510 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: User: contents removed Computer: contents removed Description: Folder redirection policy application has been delayed until the next logon because the group policy logon optimization is in effect. If I create a folder on the local drive and point the GPO to that path, the menu appears without issues. Is there an issue with redirecting to network shares or am I doing something wrong? |

What do you mean by "use Classic Shell to redirect my Start Menu"? Classic Shell doesn't redirect menus. |

I'm using Classic Shell to get the Classic Start Menu (Like Windows XP) when my users login. Sorry If I wasn't too clear. |

It is still not clear. You are talking about a folder redirection (like storing the Start Menu folder on a network share). This is not done by Classic Shell. It is done by the operating system. Classic Shell uses whatever folder the OS says contains the start menu. If the location of the start menu folder changes while the menu is running, I expect bad things will happen. So you have to use a method of redirecting the folder that does its thing before the Explorer process starts. |

Classic Shell 4.0.4 introduces Group Policy support for all of its settings. Amongst those are new Group Policies to control menu redirection, independent of the OS settings. Extract the ADML and ADMX files from C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\PolicyDefinitions.zip to C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions folder (for Local Group Policy). If you have Active Directory domain, extract the files to %logonserver%\sysvol\%userdnsdomain%\policies\PolicyDefinitions\. The 4 policies to redirect the menu are: - Start Menu folder - Programs folder - Common Programs folder - Common Start Menu folder You must exit the Start menu by right clicking the Start button or by running "C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe" -exit and then start it again from "C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\ClassicStartMenu.exe". |
