My system finally did a Windows 10 Pro update from 10240.17071 to version 14393.321 (my system shuts down during update reboots) which for some reason disabled my ClassicShell v4.3. I tried to reinstall it but it found my previous installation so it terminated. I used my uninstall program which finds all the registry and files and during the uninstall the ClassicShell window popped up and said it couldn't install. The uninstall program continued though and deleted everything. Just to make sure I used a registry editor and it found several more entries so I deleted those as well. I tried to install twice more and kept getting a box looking for the file: "ClassicShellSetup64_4_2_5.msi" which I can't seem to find on the ClassicShell downloads.

It worked great until the Windows update, in my initial install back in May I had no problems installing nor did I have any issues when it upgraded to 4.3. It changed in the Win10 update.

I HATE the Windows 10 start menu, and actually don't care for Windows 10 :(

Thank You,
betty

I followed the link and downloaded the utility however as I stated in my message I had already done a complete (all reg and files) for v4.3 when it wouldn't install. After the uninstall program I use (not the Classic Start Menu uninstall), just to make sure I did my own registry search to make sure it found all entries. I managed to find a few more it had missed.

I ran the utility I downloaded anyway and it put a message in red below the path line with a browse button for me to find the path for it. Since the original install locations had been removed along with all the files I couldn't point it to anything. After this I used an Explorer type program and did a complete file search on all my drives and partitions. I found the directory where apparently has moved the initial install to during the upgrade so I started the Classic Shell utility again and pointed it to that directory and it uninstalled the program.

I tried to install again and received the same message as in my initial post about wanting the 64bit file again. I did another system and registry scan and the only files on my system with the name of "classic shell" are in the print screen below. If any of these belong to the program please let me know which ones and I will delete them.

Download this utility: http://www.mediafire.com/download/3uker ... tility.exe. Run it. Click "Remove Classic Shell". Do not click the Browse button. Instead just click OK.

Then restart your Windows. Then reinstall the latest version from www.classicshell.net.

I downloaded the utility again as you told me in your first reply. I followed your instructions exactly this time. Sorry to say I still cannot install it as I get the same message I did before about it wanting the 64 bit version and when I cancel out of there (as I have also tried just hitting ok and it goes back to wanting the 64 bit file) it gives a message about being unable to uninstall the previous version, which is confusing at best since I am trying to install. I have also downloaded v4.3 a few times to ensure that the one I had wasn't corrupted in the d/l process.

I always reboot after using the utility program, I have even tried shutting down completely to no avail. I even tried installing it in safe mode and get the same results. I tried the compatibility troubleshooter, running as administrator and the end result is the same. After each failed install attempt I rerun the utility and reboot again. I have done all of the above repeatedly over the past couple of days.

Today I had the utility make a log but when I looked through it I realized it is nothing that I want to post in a public forum. I would gladly email it to a tech but will not disclose my system information openly. I am an extremely advanced computer user which is probably why I dislike Windows 10 so much as it is mainly bloatware for those who are computer/tablet etc. unskilled or for those who just like to push an icon. I am neither of those.

Although at this point it may be a moot point, below are more screen captures of the utility log, and the messages I get during the install attempts:

thank you,

betty

Download this file: http://www.mediafire.com/file/yohwvj5ep ... _4_2_5.exe
Run it with the command line argument "extract64". This will extract the missing MSI file. Then point the installer to the file when asked.

You may have to rename the exe to "x.exe" before you run it to get around the compatibility check in the new Windows 10.

So very sorry for the reply delay, it's been one or two of those weeks  ...

I downloaded the file you listed and despite the commands I used to extract it, including renaming it, all I would get was the extract options so I ended up just installing it which went perfectly as opposed to the issues I was having with the v4.3. It is running great just like the v4.3 did prior to the win 10 upgrade that uninstalled it.

Thank you so very much for the support and for creating the shell that helps to get rid of the Windows 10 horrendous start menu!!

betty
