Hi, quite a number of programs create shortcuts in the start menu whose target is a .url file.
(E.g. properties of such a shortcut in the start menu show this as the target: "D:\File Management\FreeCommander XE\FreeCommander.url")

Viewed in Classic Start Menu, these appear blank. (No icon). Thus cannot be distinguished from invalid shortcuts.

However, if I use Aston Menu, browser icons are shown. (Albeit it may be an IE icon although my default browser is Pale Moon- a Firefox derivative).
Where web .url's are present in the start menu, these are shown with the correct icon.

I've found some references to people seeing blank icons in this situation with no resolution, albeit they did not refer specifically to Classic Start Menu as far as I recall. Suddenly (since I happen to have both Classic Shell and Aston Menu installed for comparison) I noted the difference above.

Any ideas please? Thanks!

Win 8.1 Pro, 32 bit.

Some programs put .url shortcuts while some create links (.lnk) shortcuts to a .url file. These will have the blank icon. The icons are the same as what Windows Explorer shows since it isn't Classic Start Menu which resolves the icons, but Explorer.

Hi, thanks for confirming the behaviour. I note if I open the shortcut folder in explorer, such icons are blank, as you say.

The odd thing is I've only really noticed this the last few months, and finally decided to explore this- yet for many years, I've had many programs installed.
