Seems that the line spacing between entries is a little to high. Flyouts like on Control Panel take up 2 columns. Is this how the 'real' W7 menu displays lines?

The CSM is not supposed to be pixel perfect with the Windows 7 menu. :) But you can adjust the "line spacing" by adjusting the padding from the skin. For submenus, adjust the values of Submenu_padding and Submenu_icon_padding depending on the skin. The 4 values indicate padding from left/top/right/bottom sides. So you need to adjust top and bottom values.

The original Windows 7 menu cannot show cascading menus in multiple columns. Classic Shell can show either as a single scrolling column or as multiple columns to avoid scrolling.

I recall that the previous version of CSM in classic mode had a smaller line spacing then the beta does.

thats because the beta uses completely new skins and the spacing is defined within a skin.., i think your referring to the spacing between each item, whereas gauravK i believe was referring to the overall padding.. but as said it can be modified within a skin. Although i would have to agree with you it does seem a little spaced, but thats for Ivo to decide :P (spaced also means easier to read, and easier to click, not just taking up more room)

The spacing of the sub-menus in the Aero skin is made to match the spacing of the jumplist and the search list of Windows 7. In Windows 7 the sub-menus use a different selection highlight than the main menu, which is less detailed and needs 2 less pixels. I decided for consistency to use the same highlight graphic in all cases. This makes the height of the menu item 10% larger.

BTW, the sub-menu metrics have not changed for some time. I don't have older version of CSM in front of me right now, but I'm almost certain the sub-menus were the same.

And as Jcee mentioned, all of this is adjustable if you edit the skin.

The lighter highlight for submenus used in the original Windows 7 menu was too faint to see IMHO so this also improves the selection for submenus. :)

Figured out what is going on. I use small icons for my skins. I set my small icons in CSM to 24. If I set them to 16 which is the normal size for context menus the line spacing is OK.

right. If you want your main menu to use 24x24 and the sub-menus to use 16x16, then set your large icon size to 24x24.
The search and the jumplists will use the small size though.

Much better, thanks Ivo.
