I got hold of Windows 8.1 RTM and did an upgrade. CS does not start automatically. I have to start it manually. Any ideas how to get it to start automatically?

I will have to wait until RTM is available for realz before I can do any final testing.
For the record, are you using 32 or 64 bit, Pro or not?

I should have done the obvious. I uninstalled CS then reinstalled it. Now it starts fine. Evidently doing an upgrade kept CS but failed to have it start automatically. I even tried the repair option first on the CS installer but that didn't help.

Running Windows 8.1 Pro x64 RTM.

So you upgraded from Win8 to 8.1 in place? Did you do it through the store or from an ISO?

ISO. Went really smooth. Not only did I have to reinstall CS but also Stardock's ModernMix. All my programs and apps stayed put. Some visual changes I made reverted to the defaults so I had to change them. So far, so good.

I decided to go back to Windows 8 due to some weird things I experienced none having anything to do with CS. Normally I don't do upgrades, I do a fresh install. Unfortunately you can't do a fresh install with the ISO because it requires a valid 8.1 activation key. I'll wait for it to show up on Technet.

[From Ivo] Please, do not post torrents to leaked builds here. I'm sure if people are motivated enough they will find what they are looking for.

That is what I going to do when Windows 8.1 comes out in October I will uninstall Classic Shell before installing it. Then reinstall Classic Shell.

I think running a repair install after running Windows 8.1 for the first time should fix it. Of course it won't automatically run the start menu right away (well, maybe it should). So you'll have to start it manually the first time or log off.

You can add an event in your event manager, to start the classicshell automaticly.
Event manager is inside MMC (Microsoft Management Console) then add a snapp-in, add the Event Manager.
Then make a new event and make it start automaticly each time a user logs on.

I did two upgrades to 8.1 RTM (official ISO from MS), one with Classic Shell 3.6.8 and one with uninstalling CS 3.6.8 first and reinstalling 3.9.3 after upgrade. No issues so far ;), except that I have (File-)Explorer hangs from time to time (need to kill task) with Classic Explorer enabled (using 3.9.3). Need to investigate this further. I'll keep you updated...

If you think the Explorer hanging/slowdown is a Classic Shell related issue, then try disabling it via Internet Options -> Manage Addons dialog and see if the hanging goes away. If you are convinced it's due to Classic Shell, capture some dumps using SysInternals procmon and upload them here by doing procdump -n 10 -s 1 explorer.exe. See here how to capture crash dumps: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6

I talked about FILE(!!)-Explorer, not Classic IE 9, so disabling the Browser Add-On won't help ;) ! BTW: the browser add-on causes no problems!

Both IE and File Explorer addons can be enabled/disabled via Manage Addons dialog. This is because both share a common addon model and once upon a time (Windows 98 era), both were deeply integrated. :)
